Advisors & Experts

The following is a tentative list of experts. Additional experts may be enlisted, or multiple visits requested by an expert, as determined on ongoing basis.

Thomas Eisenbarth - Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering  Worcester Polytechnic Institute, MA, USA. He  worked as a member of the Horst Goertz Institute (HGI) in the embedded security group of Prof. Christof Paar and spent two years at the Center for Cryptology and Information Security (CCIS) at Florida Atlantic University. Expert in Embedded systems security, Side channel analysis, physical attacks and their prevention, Efficient implementation of cryptographic algorithms.

Tim Güneysu - member in a corresponding national project  funded by the German Science Foundation,  working in the field of applied data security and cryptology. His primary research topics are secure cryptographic systems and services, in particular for reconfigurable systems, such as FPGA-based platforms. He is co-founder of the SciEngines GmbH, a company developing and distributing the COPACOBANA machine which is the first and only programmable hardware cluster with up to 128 FPGAs dedicated to the task of cryptanalysis. Thus we expect also some very helpful synergistic effects for both projects.

Peter Horák - professor at the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, University of Washington, Tacoma, USA, expert in Boolean functions, graph theory, combinatorics, combinatorial designs, coding theory, theoretical computer science. He is a holder of the Erdos number 1 (solve 3 Erdos problems).

Tal Malkin - is an associate professor of Computer Science at Columbia University, where she directs the Cryptography Lab. Her research expertise includes side-channel attacks using leakage-resilient and tamper-resilient cryptographic constructions, including her seminal work on Algorithmic Tamper-Proofing. She will advise the project on leakage-resilient and tamper-resilient implementations of cryptographic schemes. Prof. Malkin is the recipient an NSF CAREER award, an IBM faculty partnership award and Google Faculty Research award.

David Naccache - Professor at Université Paris II, Panthéon-Assas and member of the Équipe de Cryptologie at École Normale Supérieure, Paris. He is an expert for digital signatures with industry experience at Gemplus International, a smart card provider. His expertise in particular includes work on fault attacks  and shielding cryptographic circuits against probing attacks. We expect his experience to be of great value when exploring countermeasures against side-channel attacks.

Francois-Xavier Standaert - associate researcher of the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) and professor at the UCL Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Electronics and Applied Mathematics (ICTEAM). In June 2011, he has been awarded a Starting Independent Research Grant by the European Research Council. His research interests include digital electronics, FPGAs and cryptographic hardware, low power implementations for constrained environments (RFIDs, sensor networks), the design and cryptanalysis of symmetric cryptographic primitives, physical security issues in general and side-channel analysis in particular.

In dependence of the outcomes achieved at the beginning of the project, we plan to include one or two additional experts with expertise in FPGA implementations of finite field arithmetic and side-channel attacks.

Overall, we expect 2-3 one week stays for experts at TAU per year, at a cost of 9000 € per year (all expenses in accordance with the GUIDELINES FOR THE PREPARATION OF PROJECT PLANS).
